Overview

Apprentice Electrician (Industrial) located in Yellowknife, NT (must already be enrolled in an Electrical Apprentice program)

 

Performs electrical maintenance and repairs under the direct supervision of an experienced Journeyperson electrician on generation and control equipment, along with auxiliary equipment such as electric motors, transformers, relays, electronic governors, voltage regulators, and other NTPC electrical systems in diesel and /or hydro generating stations.  All work shall be carried out in accordance with the Canadian Electrical Code and Northwest Territories Power Corporation policies and standards. 

Responsibilities

  • Obtain experience troubleshooting diesel generator electrical systems including the ability to set electronic governors and voltage regulators unsupervised in the field.
  • Assists with scheduled overhauls of diesel electric and hydro generation units, includes but is not limited to cleaning and testing of windings, exciter diode bridges, replacement of bearings and checking and torquing of wire and cable connections.
  • Obtain the skills to maintain and repair auxiliary generator equipment and devices, including automatic and manual voltage regulators, generator protection devices, metering and cleaning and checking all wiring and terminations in generator control cubicles.
  • Maintenance and repairs to high and low voltage switchgear and breakers. This involves cleaning breaker circuits and motor control centres, cleaning and calibration of high voltage breakers, torquing buss bar bolts and checking wiring and terminations.
  • Maintain and repair Corporate building electrical systems (heating, air conditioning, fire alarms, lighting, etc.).  You may be required to install circuitry in buildings or pieces of equipment, which may require the use of tech cable or conduit.
  • Obtain the ability to read and work off blueprints, as well as interpret drawings, diagrams, and specifications of a variety of types of electrical equipment, including manufacturer’s manuals and parts books.
  • Maintain a safe, clean and organised work environment and acts in a pro-active manner to make timely recommendations for continuous improvement of Corporation operations and equipment.
  • Travel to remote locations to assist in maintaining and repairing power generating and distribution equipment. Travel will include small aircraft, boats, and helicopters.
  • All other duties as required.

Qualifications

  • This competition is open to current Electrical Apprentices who are already enrolled in an Electrical apprentice program (must provide proof of program/hours upon screening).
  • Preference will be given to candidates who are already in at least their 3rd year of an Electrical Apprenticeship (must be able to provide current confirmation/hours with application).
  • Must have a valid NWT Class 5 driver’s license (or equivalent); a class 5P will not be accepted.
  • Some related electrical and/or maintenance experience would be an asset.
  • Employee is expected to obtain a Journeyperson-level Electrician (industrial) certification, preferably with an interprovincial red seal.
  • Demonstrated ability to communicate effectively, both in written and verbal form.
  • Demonstrated ability to work with minimal supervision.
  • Must be a team player.
  • Must be willing/able to attend trade courses/school as and when required throughout the apprentice program.
  • Must provide satisfactory criminal background check.
  • Must provide at least two supervisor references.

This apprentice position is located in Yellowknife, NT. Salary for this position starts at $28.44/hr. and increases as the apprenticeship progresses (as per Collective Agreement); in addition, there is a location allowance of approximately $4,642 per year.
