Overview

Reporting to the Manager, Engineering Design, provides mechanical engineering design and analysis including project management and administration services for the upgrade, rehabilitation, or completely new construction of small to medium-sized power generating stations – both diesel and hydro-electric.

Responsibilities

In a team environment, under the administrative direction of the Manager, Engineering Design, on a project or task-based basis the incumbent:

  • Participates in department meetings with the Engineering Department Management Team (EMT) and department staff as required and by team management principles to determine work priorities and provides detailed estimates of person-hours and work plans to complete own workload.
  • Designs and analyses mechanical systems for the installation and continuous operation of diesel engines/diesel power generation facilities and hydro-mechanical systems that meet the power generation requirements of the user/community, are economical and meet the latest editions of all applicable codes, standards, and regulations.
  • Conduct plant assessment and feasibility studies, including comparing alternatives using net present value and life cycle analysis, for the mechanical upgrade or rehabilitation of hydroelectric and/or diesel power plants, overhaul or replacement of engines, or construction of new power generating facilities.
  • Evaluate plant capacity heating loads for residual heat distribution projects and design or assist in the design of heat recovery and distribution systems for exporting heat from power generating plants.
  • Reviews and assists in the development of maintenance plans at the request of regional staff and provides mechanical maintenance support to individual plants which may involve answering routine telephone inquiries, reviewing design proposals prepared by regional/area staff, troubleshooting, and performing research on simple to complex mechanical problems.
  • Performs construction supervision and prepares project-specific detailed mechanical commissioning procedures on assigned projects and performs the mechanical portion of the on-site engine or plant commissioning as required.
  • Prepares technical specifications, tender documents, drawings, and estimates for NTPC-designed mechanical projects and participates in the tender analysis process by corporate procedures.
  • Prepares requests for proposals (RFPs) including detailed scope of work for mechanical engineering services for external engineering consultants and specialist services and participates in the review and analysis of RFPs and selection of successful tender by corporate procedures.
  • Carries out mechanical design checks and reviews the work done by engineering consultants, specialists, and in-house design staff to ensure a consistently high quality of work and investigates any concerns or complaints regarding the quality of work to determine, initiate, or recommend corrective action.
  • Performs contract administration on construction contracts as assigned, including the preparation of progress reports, feasibility, design and construction reports, and payment documents for review and approval by the EMT and by department procedures.

Qualifications

  • Bachelor or Master of Science Degree in Mechanical Engineering with a minimum five years of direct experience in an electrical utility, mining, or consulting company. 
  • Must be registered as a P.Eng (Professional Engineer) in Canada and eligible for transfer as P.Eng with the Northwest Territories and Nunavut Association of Professional Engineers and Geoscientists (NAPEG).
  • Experience in the design, operation, and maintenance of power generation and distribution facilities and technical knowledge in diesel / hydro-electric utility engineering to analyze performance and capabilities.
  • Analytical, project management and technical skills to provide appropriate recommendations regarding the maintenance, replacement, or enhancement of mechanical systems and to participate in mechanical engineering tendering and project management activities.
  • Interpersonal and team building skills in addition to proven oral and written communication skills to collaborate effectively as a member of the engineering team and prepare technical and administrative reports.
  • Excellent computer skills in operating a variety of engineering, financial, and administrative programs (MS Office Suite, AutoCAD, Outlook, MS Project, etc.) and proven experience with mechanical software.

 

Salary for this position ranges from $66.22/hr-$80.48hr. plus a location allowance of approximately $3,823 per annum.
