Overview

This position is located in Yellowknife, NT

 

Reporting to Manager, Mechanical Services, Energy South Operations, perform journeyperson level mechanical work on Hydro turbines, diesel generator sets and Related auxiliary equipment including, pumps, compressors, radiators, heat exchangers, lubricating oil systems, fuel oil systems, cooling systems, mobile equipment and other mechanical equipment. The incumbent will be responsible for the routine maintenance as set out by the manufacturer, as well as the minor and major overhauls associated with the operation of all Hydro Turbine and diesel-powered generating sets in Energy South Operations region.

Responsibilities

This position has the responsibilities of a Crew Leader, in addition to the responsibilities of the Journeyperson Diesel Mechanic or Millwright. It shall be the duty of a Crew Leader, under the general direction of the Manager, to supervise the work of the employees and contractors under their charge in such a manner that work shall be carried out safely, efficiently, and expeditiously. The duties and responsibilities of a Crew Leader include such activities as:

  • ensuring all work is carried out in accordance with the NTPC Health & Safety Management System and the NTPC Environmental Management System,
  • liaising with appropriate internal and external parties as required,
  • planning, coordinating, and assigning work with consideration of workloads and priorities,
  • instructing, directing, and supervising workers in the performance of their duties,
  • coaching and mentoring workers and providing training where required,
  • ensuring all required documentation and records are properly completed, distributed, and filed,
  • monitoring quality control,
  • providing feedback to crew members on their performance (excludes hiring, firing and discipline of crew members), and
  • providing input to the manager regarding the performance of crew members.
  • Other duties as required.

Qualifications

  • Red Seal Journeyperson Certification as a Heavy Duty Mechanic, Millwright or Hydro Mechanic with at least 2 years’ experience performing journeyperson work in a Powerhouse environment or similar heavy industrial setting and experience performing maintenance and overhauls on Kaplan & Francis or other relevant hydro turbines, hydro-mechanical governors and related auxiliary equipment. Equivalencies may be considered. 
  • Experience working on small to medium sized diesel powered gensets and other auxiliary equipment related to diesel power generation.
  • Experience in condition monitoring of major industrial assets such as vibration analysis, oil sampling, etc.
  • Excellent diagnostic and deductive trouble-shooting skills and the ability to manage multiple tasks and prioritize effectively to meet tight production schedules.
  • Must have a valid NWT Class 5 driver's license. 
  • Ability to interpret drawings, diagrams, and specifications of a variety of types of mechanical equipment, including manufacturer's manuals and parts books.
  • Ability to communicate effectively, both in written and verbal form, as well as work with minimal supervision in a team environment.
  • Computer skills to operate a variety of software related to plant operation and equipment maintenance. Display Proficiency utilising Microsoft Office Suite, Microsoft Project, Cad software and other office software.
  • Satisfactory criminal record check.

 

This is a bargaining unit position. Salary for this position ranges from $57.85/hr. to $70.28/hr, plus a location allowance of approximately $4,642 per annum.
