Overview

Reporting to Manager, Mechanical Services, Energy South Operations (ESO), performs Journeyperson Level work to safely accomplish tasks relating to the installation, overhaul, repair and preventative maintenance of hydro and diesel power generation equipment and related auxiliary equipment in the ESO Region.

Responsibilities

  • Always work safely, adhere to all aspects of the NTPC Health & Safety and Environmental programs, comply with all rules & regulations, and continually practice health & safety while performing any duties.
  • Participates in the Mechanical Services work group team meetings as required and provides input geared towards determining group objectives and assessing and coordinating unit workload and priorities. 
  • Performs Journey Level millwright work in the installation, overhaul, maintenance, troubleshooting, and repair of hydroelectric and diesel generation equipment and auxiliary equipment in accordance with work orders and schedules, to ensure equipment is maintained in peak operating condition. 
  • Utilize the Computerized Maintenance Management System by entering reports, parts lists, resources, and job times, schedules and work process as well as accessing work orders and equipment history. 
  • Inspect work to ensure product specifications and quality standards are met. 
  • Provides specialist millwright advice and assistance to other trades and contractors in troubleshooting problems and provides guidance and training to any apprentices, maintenance staff or helpers as required. 
  • Participates in assessing the on-going performance of equipment and provides recommendations regarding future preventative maintenance, enhancement or replacement programs to ensure efficient operations and to minimize the frequency and duration of down time and service interruptions. 
  • Performs fabrication tasks such as cutting, welding, fitting, sandblasting and painting operation. 
  • Erects scaffolding. Perform Rigging and/or Crane Operator experience for moving, installing and transporting heavy machinery. 
  • Performs confined space entries as required. 
  • Maintains mechanical maintenance records and equipment reports, prepares parts lists and estimates of person-hours and work plans to complete own workload as required for planning, inventory, budgeting and scheduling purposes. 
  • Maintains a clean and safe work environment during the completion of work activities and ensures compliance to all safety programs, safety legislation, and Corporation Safety Rules. 
  • Travel extensively within the region when required; must be able to travel to remotely located hydroelectric and diesel plants to performs mechanical maintenance work.  
  • Provides training to and receive training from co-workers, as well as perform other responsibilities in applicable areas within your work unit as assigned by the manager/supervisor. 
  • Issues work protection lock out tag out permits as per Corporation policy /procedures. De-energizes and isolates / energizes and returns to service any units, plants and their respective auxiliary equipment as per Corporation Work Protection Code procedures. 
  • Perform other duties as assigned.

Qualifications

  • Red Seal Certification as an Industrial Millwright or Hydro Mechanic WITH a minimum four (4) years' experience performing journeyperson work.
  • Must have a minimum two (2) years' experience performing journey person work in a Powerhouse environment or similar heavy industrial setting.
  • Preference will be given to Industrial Millwright or Hydro Mechanic journeypersons with experience working on Kaplan and Francis turbines, hydro-mechanical governors and multiple
    types of bearings, as well as some experience with hydraulics, pump, gates, stoplogs, compressors, and other equipment related to
    hydroelectric and diesel power generation.
  • Ability to read and understand technical information, prints and engineering data, interpret charts, graphs, and gauge scales and perform
    calculations and determine dimensions.
  • Ability and willingness to learn new concepts, techniques and best practices and to work in conjunction with other skilled trades and
    engineering disciplines
  • Excellent diagnostic and deductive trouble-shooting skills and the ability to manage multiple tasks and prioritize effectively to meet tight
    production schedules.
  • Computer skills to operate a variety of software related to plant operation and equipment maintenance.
  • Display Proficiency utilising Microsoft Office Suite, Microsoft Project, Cad software and other office software.
  • Display Strong knowledge of condition monitoring techniques such as vibration monitoring, oil sample analysis.
  • Must have a valid Class 5 Driver’s License.
  • Must undergo a successful criminal background check.

 

Salary for this position ranges from $50.05/hr - $60.81/hr. plus location allowance of approximately $4,642 per annum.
