Overview

Reporting to the Director, Energy South Operations (ESO) in planning and directing division goals, objectives, and programs as one of seven managers in a team managed organizational structure. Under the direction of the Director, ESO leads the daily operation of the ESO Divisions Substations, and Electrical Services Maintenance team and is responsible to ensure the Mission, Vision and Values of the organization are articulated and understood by employees. Leads employees towards the achievement of the divisional goals and objectives. Operates as a manager for direct reports, which includes setting objectives, assigning duties, assessing, and managing individual performance, with the aim of delivering results.

Responsibilities

  • As a member of the ESO management team provides input to the Director regarding the development and evaluation of short and long term operational, capital, and strategic plans and budgets and assists in the preparation of planning and budget documents for corporate
    submission.
  • Under the direction of the Director, ESO coordinates team meetings on a regular and ad hoc basis to establish overall group goals and objectives and provides team leadership, direction and support to the generation group, ESO Maintenance Planners on matters related to the
    scheduling of staff and assignment of work to ensure safe, efficient day-to-day operation and maintenance of diesel and hydro generation facilities.
  • Under the direction of the Director, ESO participates in the recruitment of staff, prepares job descriptions, identifies training needs and the resources available to meet staff training requirements, and monitors and evaluates the work and performance of staff.
  • Under the direction of the Director, ESO develops, co-ordinates and monitors preventive maintenance programs, reporting systems and budgets for all diesel and hydro plants, buildings and property, electrical equipment, the ESO Division to ensure that equipment and property
    is effectively maintained, and that work is completed accurately and on schedule.
  • Under the direction of the Director, ESO oversees, monitors, and prepares requisitions, , general contracts, specifications, and authorization forms as required for assigned maintenance projects on general plant maintenance, and electrical generation and substation maintenance.
  • Under the direction of the Director, ESO coordinates the assessment and response of the operation group to unscheduled or emergency operations and maintenance problems to ensure operations and equipment are restored in a timely and efficient manner.
  • Under the direction of the Director, ESO oversees monitors, and prepares requisitions, special work orders, general contracts, specifications, and authorization forms as required for assigned operational requirements in the hydro and diesel plants
  • As assigned by the Director, ESO monitors, approves, and controls expenditures on assigned budgets in accordance with Corporation financial policies and procedures and assesses financial records, accounts, and variance reports on a regular basis to ensure budgets are
    adhered to and provides recommendations and advice to the Director regarding the reallocation or adjustment of funds to achieve planned financial objectives. This includes budget responsibility for operations, maintenance, substation, hydro and diesel maintenance and planning
  • As assigned by the Director, ESO and in conjunction with the ESO Divisions Management teams regional budgeting process the position coordinates the maintenance, operations and capital budgets.
  • Provides technical advice to the Projects and Engineering Division and Finance Division regarding operations and maintenance budget administration, scope requirements for division capital projects, operations and maintenance projects, and general administrative policies and
    procedures to facilitate division and corporate planning and administration.
  • Supports the Divisional Asset Manager with the required operational information / needs to initiate capital projects.
  • Provides site monitor duties for designated capital projects as the Project Manager
  • Manages assigned capital projects as a Project Manager to set the scope of the project, project budget development. Manage projects by issuing tenders, RFPs and contracts for services and supplies for the capital projects. Management of the construction or procurement of the
    assets and coordination with internal staff, contractors or consultants with Financial and CIPEx reporting the required management and administration work to see projects through from conception to completion including project closeouts of the capital project in accordance
    with corporate policies and procedures.
  • As assigned by the Director, ESO provides recommendations to Head Office divisions regarding the need for corporate policies and procedures to support ESO planning and maintenance team activities and provides input to draft policies and procedures.
  • You will be required to participate in a regular rotation to Snare, Bluefish and Taltson on an as required basis to oversee operations and maintenance as well as to ensure an effective interface with contractors on site.

Qualifications

  • Certification as an Electrical Engineer (must be eligible to register as P.Eng with NAPEG), Electrical Technologist (must be eligible to register as a C.E.T. with ASET), Journeyperson Power Systems or Industrial Electrician with interprovincial red seal, plus extensive related power plant operation & maintenance experience in either a hydro or diesel plant environment including distribution transmission substations. Equivalencies may be considered.
  • Minimum five years management experience, preferably in a unionized environment, or at least five years managing your own commerical/industrial contracting business with employees required.
  • Valid Class 5 Drivers License required. 
  • Must have knowledge of transmission/substation work processes and procedures including lock out / tag out. 
  • Must have knowledge of administrative and financial planning procedures to coordinate maintenance and plant operation activities and to provide sound advice and recommendations regarding the development, implementation and monitoring of area plans and operating budgets.
  • Analytical skills to research and assess a variety of technical information including drawings and specifications. 
  • Strong interpersonal and team building skills to collaborate effectively with the generation group in setting and accomplishing work objectives, and in maintaining cooperative working relationships with other Managers and area staff, and head office in meeting group and area objectives.
  • Proven written and oral communication skills, and public relations skills and experience to establish and maintain effective communication with residential and commercial customers, government agencies, and community representative in dealing with individual and community
    issues and problems while maintaining a positive public image for the Corporation. 
  • Computing skills to operate a variety of saftware programs (ie, Word, Outlook, Excel, Powerpoint, CMMS, etc) to input data, produce work orders, administrative and financial documents and reports. 
  • Successful Criminal Records Check must be provided prior to commencing work. 

Salary for this position ranges from $71.54/hr-$89.43/hr. plus location and accommodation allowances of approximately $8,842 per annum.
