Overview

In a team environment and under the direction of the Manager, Maintenance Services, the Diesel Mechanic performs journeyperson level mechanical work on natural gas and diesel generator sets as well as associated support equipment including, pumps, compressors, radiators, heat exchangers, lubricating oil systems, fuel oil systems, cooling systems, and other mechanical equipment. The incumbent will be responsible for the routine maintenance as set out by the manufacturer and the Corporation's CMMS program, as well as conduct minor and major overhauls associated with the operation of two (2) large natural gas generator sets in Inuvik. This role also involves working on other diesel engines such as Wartsila, Detroit, Volvo, John Deere EMD and CAT engines throughout the Corporation. This position includes the responsibility of routine mechanical maintenance on the wind turbine including inspecting, diagnosing and repairing mechanical systems.

Responsibilities

  • Always work safely, adhere to all aspects of the NTPC Health, Safety and Environmental programs, comply with all rules and regulations, and continually practice health and safety while performing all duties.
  • Ensure the safety of other employees, contractors and the general public in the workplace by:
    • Reporting any failure to adhere to safety practices or rules
    • Providing detailed orientations and identification of hazards to all visitors
    • Removing hazards or make the workplace safe when leaving a work area
  • Participate in the continuous improvement of the NTPC Health, Safety and Environmental program as well as NTPC’s safety culture.
  • Participates in team meetings in accordance with the principles of team management to determine generation program objectives, to provide input to group financial and program planning, and to assess and coordinate unit workload and priorities.
  • Maintains and repairs small, medium and large size diesel and gas engines, generators of various sizes , auxiliary equipment and LNG facilities as per Corporation guidelines. Acts in a pro-active manner to make timely recommendations for continuous improvement of operations and equipment.
  • Completes and/or assists with scheduled overhauls in a timely and professional manner according to Corporation and Manufacturer standards.
  • Makes routine trips to remote satellite plants for inspection, preventative maintenance, installation and repairs to equipment and to complete various tests as required (e.g., such as vibration monitoring, lubricating oil and water sampling).
  • Completes trip and equipment reports, prepares required parts lists for diesel maintenance, fuel and oil inventories, provides distributed labor data, and ensures valid travel and freight costing within our CMMS program.
  • Provides accurate assessment of equipment and diesel plants and troubleshoots various mechanical problems both on site and over the telephone.
  • Provides assistance to other trades and contractors as required and provides guidance and training to operational staff for trouble shooting of large gas or diesel engines.
  • Maintains a clean and safe work environment in the performance of work, maintains all tools and equipment in good working condition, ensures compliance to all safety programs, health and safety legislation, and Corporation Safety Rules in the completion of work activities.
  • Provides training to and receives training from co-workers and performs other related duties as determined by the work group in consultation with the Director, Energy North Operations.

Qualifications

  • Certification as a Journeyperson Heavy Duty Diesel Mechanic/Heavy Equipment Technician preferably with an Interprovincial Red Seal AND a minimum of five (5) years of directly related experience at the journeyperson level in the repair, maintenance and operation of diesel generators and related equipment required. Equivalencies may be considered.
  • A full valid NWT Class 5 driver's license is required.
  • The successful candidate will be required to provide a successful criminal records check.
  • Ability to interpret drawings, diagrams, and specifications of a variety of types of mechanical equipment, including manufacturer's manuals and parts books.
  • Ability to communicate effectively, both in written and verbal form, as well as work with minimal supervision.
  • Ability to work in a team environment.
  • Excellent knowledge of safety regulations and procedures.
  • Must have the ability to diagnose problems and propose solutions.
  • Experience with gas engines is an asset.

Salary for this position ranges from $50.05/hr. to $60.81/hr. plus a location allowance of $11,808 per annum. This position is located in Inuvik, NT and does require a successful candidate to reside/relocate here. Relocation assistance will be provided.
