Plant Superintendent - Aklavik

Under the general supervision and direction of the Manager, Plant Operations Beaufort Delta, the Plant Superintendent is responsible for the day-to-day operation and maintenance of the power generation facility and ensures a safe, efficient and reliable supply of electricity to the community.  The Plant Superintendent represents and supports corporate programs and business initiatives and provides effective customer service within the community, participate as a member of the Energy North Operations division in determining department objectives and priorities, and will undertake cross training in other program areas as determined by the division management team.

In a team environment, under the direction of the Manager, Plant Operations Beaufort Delta:

• Always work safety, adhere to all aspects of the NTPC Health, Safety and Environment programs, comply with all rules and regulations, and continually practice health and safety while performing any duties.
• Ensure the safety of other employees, contractors, and the general public in the workplace by:
  • Reporting any failure to adhere to safety practices or rules
  • Providing detailed orientations and identification of hazards to all visitors
  • Removing hazards or make the workplace safe when leaving a work area
• Participate in the continuous improvement of the Health, Safety and Environment program as well as NTPC’s safety culture.
• Participate in team meetings in accordance with the principles of team management to determine generation program objectives, to provide input to group financial and program planning, and to assess and coordinate unit workload and priorities.
• Operates and maintains power generation equipment and facilities in accordance with corporate procedures, performs daily plant inspections and reports, and ensures that routine and emergency repairs and maintenance are completed in a timely and efficient manner, with assistance from the Manager, Maintenance Services and the Distribution and Transmission Division as required.
• Under the direction of the Manager, Plant Operations Beaufort Delta, de-energise and isolate/energise and return to service, units, plants and their respective auxiliary equipment as per Work Protection Code procedures.
• Provides immediate response in emergency situations including power outages and equipment failures to identify and correct problems with direction and assistance from the Manager, Maintenance Services and the Distribution and Transmission Division as required.
• Responds to customer complaints, requests, and general inquiries as the area representative for the Corporation. Directing questions to customer service staff as necessary and referring unusual problems to the attention of the Manager.
• Periodically performs meter readings, receives and actions customer orders for service connects as requested by the Customer Service Division.
• Monitors and reports on material used on work orders on a daily and weekly basis, maintains plant operating logs, engine reports and operating statistics, and other reports and statistics as required for planning and budgeting purposes. Provides information to support the development of time and material invoices in accordance with corporate procedures.
• Supervises and directs the activities of casual staff including hiring, site and safety orientation, assigning duties, supervising the completion of work, and approving time sheets.
• Requisitions, receives and maintains inventories of power plant, auxiliary equipment and building supplies, line materials, and maintenance and consumable supplies to ensure resources are locally available when required, and purchases or recommends the purchases of necessary materials in accordance with delegated authority and regional and corporate finance requirements.
• Perform or assist with preventative maintenance and overhauls on units, plant auxiliary equipment, distribution lines and sub-stations as per preventative maintenance schedules.
• Immediately attempts to identify and rectify any unsafe or potentially hazardous condition at or around the work site. If unable to rectify, incumbent must immediately notify supervisor and anyone that may be affected by the condition.
• Provides support to regional, head office or contract staff in the completion of area projects with regards to scheduling, monitoring and hands-on assistance.
• Develops and maintains good working relationships with community and local business representatives, informs the Manager, Plant Operations Beaufort Delta of local problems, issues, or initiatives that may concern the corporation. Participates with regional and head office management and staff in meetings with community representatives, and participates in corporate sponsored events.
• Maintain buildings as to a safe, clean manner including keeping entrances/exits clear of snow and debris, combustible materials stored in proper locations, testing of emergency lighting and exit signs and arranging servicing as needed. Ensure tools and equipment are properly inventoried, maintained and stored. Must keep floors swept and washed.
• Ensures the power plant, auxiliary buildings, tank farm and compound are secure and that the regional office is immediately notified of all hazardous, or potentially hazardous, conditions or environmental issues.
• Provides training to and receives training from co-workers and performs other duties related to the Energy North Operations Division as determined by the Manager, Plant Operations Beaufort Delta.

• High School diploma plus one (1) year related mechanical or electrical experience or plant operator training, or a minimum of Grade 10 education with at least three (3) years' relevant work experience. Equivalencies may be considered. 
• Related Journeyperson certification would be an asset.
• Ability to work in a team environment with minimum direct supervision in a location remote from the regional office.
• Good verbal and written communication skills to maintain effective, open, and reliable communications with team members, customers, and community representatives.
• Administrative, supervisory, and organizational skills to manage multiple tasks and assignments, direct the work of staff, and to provide documentation, reports, and recommendations to the regional office.
• Excellent knowledge of safety regulations and procedures.
• Basic computer skills are required.
• A valid First Aid and CPR certificate would be an asset
• A full and valid Class 5 driver’s license is required.
• Successful completion of a criminal records check is required.

Salary for this position ranges from $42.96/hour to $52.18/hour, in addition there is a location allowance of $16,090 per annum.
