Overview

The Asset Planning Engineer Transmission & Distribution will provide technical leadership and engineering support for the planning, design, operation, maintenance, and continual improvement of NTPC's transmission and distribution assets. The position will support system reliability, asset lifecycle management, standards development, outage investigations, maintenance planning, capital project delivery, and continuous improvement initiatives across the Corporation.

Responsibilities

  • Conducts T&D plant assessments and manage CMMS database to support feasibility studies, present value and life cycle analysis. Prepares short- and long-range plans and makes recommendations to the Asset Manager and Director, Transmission & Distribution Operations for the upgrade / rehabilitation of existing facilities and construction of new facilities, to ensure system reliability. Prepares Project Briefs in accordance with corporate guidelines.
  • Develop and execution of power flow studies, load analysis, voltage regulation studies, and contingency assessments. Evaluating system capacity, reliability, and operational performance. Compile and analyze system operating data to support engineering recommendations.
  • Assist in the development, review, and maintenance of engineering standards, specifications, procedures, and technical guidelines. Research utility best practices, applicable codes, and industry standards. Support continuous improvement initiatives related to engineering processes and documentation.
  • Conduct technical research on electrical equipment, materials, and technologies for potential use within the utility. Review manufacturer specifications and prepare technical comparisons. Evaluate products for standardization and warehouse stock requirements. Support procurement and inventory optimization efforts through technical analysis, utility best practices, applicable codes, and industry standards. 
  • Participates in the development of the annual Corporate Capital and Maintenance Planning by identifying work items for consideration. Develop and manage project budgets and prepares regular technical and budgetary progress reports on ongoing projects and, upon project completion, prepares technical reviews and budget variance reports.
  • Performs tender evaluations and provides recommendations for awarding of contracts. Carries out administration of construction contracts, equipment purchases and contract review and approval.
  • Manages assigned capital projects as project manager, including coordination with the Divisional Asset Manager to set the scope of the project, issuing, and awarding of quotes, tenders, and request for proposals for services and supplies for the capital projects, management of the construction or procurement of the assets and coordination with the Asset Manager and the Finance Division on the required administration work to close out the capital project in accordance with corporate policies and procedures. 
  • Maintains an up-to-date knowledge of electrical engineering with respect to transmission and distribution systems, construction methods, materials, contract law and engineering and safety codes through contacts with suppliers and contractors and by attending courses and conferences.
  • Provides training to and receives training from co-workers and performs administrative duties in support of the Asset Management TDO as determined by the work group in consultation with the Director of TDO.

Qualifications

  • Bachelor's degree in Electrical Engineering with five years related experience working for a utility. Equivalencies may be considered. 
  • Applicants with education from outside of Canada must provide proof of Canadian education equivalency and/or hold a relevant professional designation or membership recognized in Canada. 
  • Two years of experience directly related to Transmission & Distribution line design and operation is required.
  • Must have current Professional Engineer (P.Eng) designation and be eligible for registration with NAPEG to practice as a Professional Engineer in the NWT.
  • Qualified to review, sign, and seal engineering documents pertaining to transmission and distribution lines.
  • Proficient with the Microsoft Office suite of programs, such as Word, Excel, Outlook, etc.; as well as electrical design software.
  • Must have problem solving, decision making and issues management skills.
  • Excellent communication and writing skills.
  • Above average interpersonal skills and ability to work in a team environment.
  • Must have a Class 5 drivers licence or equivalent.
  • Successful candidate must provide satisfactory criminal records check prior to commencing work.

Salary for this position ranges from $66.22/hr-$80.48/hr. plus a location allowance of approximately $3,823 per annum. We offer a comprehensive benefits package which includes health and dental benefits, disability insurance, life insurance, paid sick days and a defined benefits pension plan.
